i hate lists

but i feel the need to proclaim somewhere that this is the album of the year for me:

Why? - Alopecia

Followed closely by Frightened Rabbit’s The Midnight Organ Fight. But Alopecia edged out because I think it will stand the test of time a little better. And it has amazing lines like “my fear of the bear at showbiz pizza when i was six was overwhelming but not dissimilar to this” and “i’m not a ladies man, i’m a landmine”. Which sound sort of dumb written out, but work so well.

I don’t think I’ve listened to enough 2008 releases to come up with my best album of 08, but I have been lovin’ a couple songs.

Blind Blind Blind off of Silver Mt. Zion’s ‘13 blues for thirteen moons’
I had seen that song live before the album came out, and it blew my fragile little mind.  and in recorded form, its still as beautiful. the repetition of ‘some hearts are true’ at the end of that song is brilliant.

on a more lighthearted and upbeat note, a bunch of songs off of Mr. Scruff’s ‘Ninja Tuna’ are awesome!  donkey ride and music takes me up are brilliant, but i think my favorite is actually kalimba.  I love when the strings come in on that song.

Good call on the Why? album. It made my top10, and would have placed higher if i heard it earlier in the year (as it’s really grown on me).
I love the lyrics “I sleep on my back cos it’s good for the spine..and..coffin rehearsal”.  He has such an awesome turn of phrase.  “Good Friday” spoiled the flow of the album for me, and if that wasn’t on the album it may have been my No.1

I’d probably go with “Kenya Dig It” by The Ruby Suns as my song of the year though (or maybe Black Mountain’s “Tyrants” for channeling 70’s rock at it’s finest).
